The German Association for the Study of English
The German Association for the Study of English (Deutscher Anglistenverband) promotes academic research in English Studies and supports the teaching and study of all facets of English Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Linguistics and English Language Teaching in Germany’s universities.
At the annual conference of the German Association for the Study of English (Anglistentag) alternating panels focus on current research topics from various perspectives.
To promote junior academics, awards and prizes for exceptional PhD theses and postdoctoral dissertations (Habilitationsschriften) are awarded on a regular basis. A triannually awarded prize for journalists is a tool by which multipliers in the media can be reached.
Our Association is member of the umbrella organisation ‘European Society for the Study of English’ (ESSE) and can therefore provide a wide framework of international contacts and academic exchange.
Part of the responsibility of promoting the study and research in German universities is also the public representation of the discipline of English Studies. The German Association for the Study of English is in close contact with the various Ministries of Education (and Arts), a large number of research organisations, and many university commissions as well as education councils and boards.
Full Membership is open to all English-studies academics who hold a PhD and whose main occupation it is to work at a university. Junior scholars who have not yet achieved a PhD may apply for associate membership.
The annual membership fee entitles you to participate in the annual plenary conference (Anglistentag). It further includes membership in the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE) and it offers you a subscription to the semi-annual journals Anglistik and The European Messenger. Membership also includes invitations to all major ESSE conferences (registration fees excluded).
